Oregon Bicycle Ride
Itinerary
August 7 - 14

Call this the "Big Sky Country" of Oregon; wide-open pastureland, lush forests quiet roads, and the peaceful sound of fresh mountain water flowing through the creek beds. This seven-day ride offers you this and more.

Saturday, August 7 - OIT Campus - Klamath Falls - Check-In & Orientation

Check-in will open at 2pm at the OIT Campus. There will be a dinner and orientation in the evening. Parking will be available at no charge for the week. Klamath Falls is located on Hwy 97 at the southern-most tip of Upper Klamath Lake. Upper Klamath Lake is Oregon's largest freshwater lake and one of the largest in the US. While you are in the area you might want to spend some time taking a paddlewheel or jet boat excursion on the lake. Or you might want to stretch your legs on one of the hiking trails in the area. Many species of birds can be found in this area. A trolley ride through downtown is also available. Go to www.klamath.org to find more information on activities in this area.

Sunday, August 8 - Klamath Falls to Bly
Mileage: 68; Elevation Gain: 1800'

Klamath Lake

A paved bike path out of town connecting to the paved section of the OC & E Rails to Trails will keep you away from much of the traffic. Winding country roads with open views of rich irrigated ranchland and grazing cattle will be the order of the day. The flat and rolling terrain make for a perfect first day. You will follow the gentle Lost River through Poe Valley at the base of Stukel Mountain.

Monday, August 9 - Bly to Silver Lake
Mileage: 70; Elevation Gain: 3400'

You will enter Oregon's "outback territory" today. Most of today's ride travels through ponderosa pine forests that are only 20-30 feet high. You will also get a taste of the dry and arid Oregon desert. This is where only the hardiest citizens live on sprawling sage brush covered ranches. Neighbors are few and far between out here. Silver Lake, a sleepy little hamlet, is the largest community in North Lake County.

Tuesday, August 10 - Silver Lake to Diamond Lake
Mileage: 86; Elevation Gain: 2800'

You will travel through the Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge with a backdrop of the Cascade Mountains. This large natural marsh provides important nesting, feeding, and resting habitat for waterfowl, while the surrounding meadowlands are attractive nesting and feeding areas for sandhill crane, yellow rail, and various shorebirds and raptors. The adjacent pine forests also support diverse wildlife including great gray owl and Rocky Mountain elk. Most of the day will be in heavy timbered forest.

Wednesday, August 11 - Diamond Lake to Diamond Lake
Mileage: 55; Elevation Gain: 5700'

Wizard Island, Crater Lake

A day of alternatives - the choice is yours. There are so many things to do here it will probably be hard to decide what to do. There is horseback riding, mountain bike rentals, hiking, boat rentals, fishing, swimming, or you simply relax. The optional ride to Crater Lake will take you around the lake. The vistas are incredible. Check out the beautifully refurbished Crater Lake Lodge and have a luxurious lunch in their dinning room.

Thursday, August 12 - Diamond Lake to Butte Falls
Mileage: 62; Elevation Gain: 2010'

If you did not visit Crater Lake yesterday, you will have a chance to do so today on the alternate route. Following the Rogue River, be sure to take advantage of stops along the way to view this magnificent wild and scenic river. It is an amazing river that flows through narrow craggy lava and lush green forests. Calm, serene lakes dot the way to the Pacific. The Rogue is one of the most popular white water rafting rivers in Oregon. As you leave the Rogue and continue south to Butte Falls you will travel through a mix of forest and meadows.

Friday, August 13 - Butte Falls to Fort Klamath
Mileage: 62; Elevation Gain: 3200'

Typical Ranch

As you continue your journey though the Rouge River National Forest you will enjoy the peacefulness of this gigantic forest. Magnificent trees create a shade canopy and the small creeks and lakes will provide a cool place to dip your feet. There are some great views of Mt. Mc Loughlin along the way. As you approach Fort Klamath you will travel along the west side of Upper Klamath Lake giving you an idea of how enormous this body of water is. Fort Klamath is known as "Cattle Country" and beef is king here.

Saturday, August 14 - Fort Klamath to Klamath Falls
Mileage: 42; Elevation Gain: 500'

Following the east side of Upper Klamath Lake back to Klamath Falls offers more views of the lake and Mt. McLoughlin. A lunch and shower will be waiting to help you get refreshed before returning home.
